Wine Advocate

The 2002 Cheval des Andes is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Malbec. It is stylistically very similar to the 2004 but more advanced in its development. This vintage is not currently available. Cheval des Andes is owned by legendary St.-Emilion producer, Chateau Cheval Blanc. The wine is sourced from their 50 hectare estate vineyard planted on its own roots in 1929. The first vintage was 1999 and the 2004 was the first in which there was more Malbec than Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. New oak is utilized for the Cabernet and 1 year old barrels for the Malbec.

Score: 93. —Jay Miller, December 2007.

Wine Enthusiast

A serious wine for serious wine drinkers. It’s 60% Cabernet and the rest Malbec. Deep, deep and deeper is how to best describe the chewy, fruit-saturated palate, but even better, this wine has guts, balance and aging capacity. Best to hold this joint-venture red from Chateau Cheval-Blanc and Terrazas de Los Andes for at least three years.

Score: 93. —Michael Schachner, July 01, 2005.

Wine Spectator

This is a finely sculpted wine, with a ripe, focused core of red currant, plum and blackberry fruit balanced by vanilla bean, coffee and smoke notes. Long and plush, with fine-grained tannins carrying the finish. Tastes more like Bordeaux than Argentina though. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2008. 3,400 cases made.

Score: 92. —James Molesworth, December 31, 2004.
